The AI Crisis is Worse Than You Think

AI is everywhere. It’s in your pocket, your inbox, and now, your news feed. Along the way, you’ve probably heard two conflicting stories. One that AI is a climate disaster. And a second that that first story is a lie. Lately, a new narrative has emerged. Claims that AI is actually green, water-efficient, and powered by a clean grid. I wanted to see if these claims actually held up. What I found... is frightening. 


We’ve been told that AI is the future. But the future has a massive energy bill. Generating a single AI response takes five times more energy than a web search. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Training Chat-GPT-3 consumed 1,287 megawatt hours of electricity. That’s enough to power 120 homes for an entire year. And the cost isn't just power. It's output. That single training run released 552 tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. By 2027, data center power consumption will outpace half the United Kingdom. These crazy energy demands can’t be satisfied by renewables . . . because unlike data centers, those don’t run 24/7. At this rate, by 2030, the global energy demand for AI will be equivalent to six Californias. We’re building the world's most advanced tech on a power grid that’s already breaking. 


But electricity isn't the only thing these machines consume. To keep those millions of processors from melting, they need to drink. For every kilowatt-hour of energy a data center uses, it swallows one liter of water for cooling. It can't just be any water. To protect the delicate hardware, it has to be fresh. The same water we need to drink. Despite this, two-thirds of all new data centers built since 2022 are in regions under high water stress. From the American Southwest to Latin America, these 'brains' are being built in the middle of a mega-drought. And contrary to common belief, only around 25% of this water can actually be recycled and recirculated around the data center. We are told AI lives in the cloud, but its footprint is etched into our physical world, draining our rivers to power our prompts.


But AI isn’t just a consumer. If we aim it correctly, it becomes the most powerful diagnostic tool in human history. It is already on the front lines. AI-driven mapping is being used to track deforestation in real-time and measure the exact speed of melting icebergs with precision we never had before. It’s helping us predict disasters before they hit—giving communities the data they need to take action and save lives in the face of a changing climate. In our oceans, AI is identifying and mapping plastic waste, turning a massive cleanup effort into a targeted, efficient operation. The reality is this: AI is a massive energy gamble. We are betting our freshwater and our grid on the hope that these machines can help us fix what we broke. The choice isn’t whether to use AI. The choice is whether we use it to solve the crisis... or to accelerate it. The clock is ticking.
